5 Ways to Protect Your Scalp after Scalp Micropigmentation

SMP hair loss treatments for both men

Although scalp micropigmentation (SMP) has been around for almost two decades now, there has been a rise in its popularity in recent years. This is because more and more people are now realizing that it’s one of the most effective non-surgical hair loss treatments out there.

If you’ve finally decided to take the plunge and invest in an SMP treatment for hair loss, start preparing.

If you’ve struggled with hair loss for a while, scalp micropigmentation can be a life-changing experience for you, so be prepared to take measures accordingly to take care of your scalp before and after the treatment.

There are both short-term and long-term aftercare measures that you need to keep in mind.

Avoid Showers

For starters, avoid washing your head for four days after every session. The aim is to keep it completely dry. Any redness or itchiness during this period is entirely normal.

On the fifth day, you can use warm water and a mild organic shampoo to wash. Again, avoid any strong chemicals like anti-dandruff shampoos or any hair growth products.

Don’t Touch the Treated Area

After you get the treatment, be mindful of touching your scalp with your bare hands for at least a while. This is because your scalp is going to be extra sensitive from the treatment, and the last thing you want is to expose it to germs or bacteria that could cause infections.

Wearing a hat or any head covering is okay, as long as it’s not irritating the scalp and interrupting the healing process.

Avoid Excessive Sweating

This measure is for the same reason you’re avoiding washing your scalp, i.e., to keep it dry.

Heavy sweating will interfere with the healing process; therefore, for at least seven days, avoid any activities that may cause you to sweat excessively. Avoid morning runs and going to the gym for a week.

If you do sweat, use a paper towel to absorb the excess moisture. After a week, your scalp will more or less be healed, and you can go back to life as usual.

No Pools or Saunas

For 30 days, avoid any chlorinated or saltwater pools. Saunas and Steam rooms are also off-limits. Any body of water with salt content needs to be avoided at all costs. This is because exposure to salty water or chlorine can seriously mess up your SMP treatment results.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

This is something you need to take care of regardless of any treatment. Excessive direct exposure to harmful UV rays can be terrible for the skin.

Initially, after the treatment, avoid tanning for a month. Later on, make sure you cover your scalp with sunscreen with an SPF value of at least 50 to ensure there is no fading, and your treatment looks it’s best.

While these are some general aftercare guidelines, it’s important to note that every skin style is different, and your practitioner is the best person to advise you on how to take care of your scalp post-treatment.
