Frequently Asked Questions

We've compiled a list of answers to common questions.

Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment for people who are struggling with hair loss. During the SMP process, the artist replicates hair follicles on the scalp over a series of sessions to recreate a person’s hairline, camouflage a scar or add density to a thinning area. These hair follicle replications are actually micro-deposits of ink under the skin (similar to a tattoo, but not as deep) that mimic real human hair. This gives the appearance of a natural-looking buzz cut or even a thick, full head of hair. You can visit this page for more information.

The average price range is around $2000-$3500. However, prices vary based on the level of effort and the surface area that needs to be treated. The smaller the area, the lower the price; the bigger the area, the higher the price. Each person is different, and we recommend setting up a free consultation to get an accurate assessment and quote.

Most people are eligible for scalp micropigmentation! Typically, it’s a treatment for men with pattern baldness or receding hairlines, but it can also help women, people with alopecia, or patients who have had failed hair transplants. If you’re struggling with hair loss, please contact Delaware SMP to set up a free consultation.

SMP is not a hair transplant. In an FUT or FUE hair transplant, they are taking hair from the back of the head and putting it on the top of the head without guaranteeing that it will grow. Scalp micropigmentation is replicating hair follicles to give the look of a shaved head or buzz cut. SMP also does not require you to shave your head for the procedure.

SMP is similar to a tattoo, but we use different ink, needles, and techniques. Also, a regular tattoo goes down to the dermis layer of the skin. During the SMP process, we are only going down to the epidermis, no lower than the thickness of a dime. (If we were to go down to the dermis in SMP, the results would not look natural.)

Yes, each SMP procedure is customized to meet each individual’s needs. We will match your skin tone, hair color, and facial features to give you the most natural results.

No! If done correctly, most people will not know you’ve had scalp micropigmentation; the results are undetectable to the naked eye. This is the reason why SMP has been growing at a rapid pace in the last 10 years.

Every person has a different pain threshold, but most patients report that it only feels like a minor annoyance.

SMP is done over a series of sessions – usually 3-4 to achieve the desired result. These sessions are spaced 2-3 weeks apart, and the whole process takes about 5-8 weeks.

There are a few reasons. First, each session takes about 2-4 hours, so we want to minimize the patients’ discomfort. Second, we need to observe how the skin reacts to the procedure, so that we can correct any problems and make any necessary adjustments to needle size or ink color.

SMP is considered permanent but acts more semi-permanent, and you will need a touch-up every 2-5 years to darken fading ink. At Delaware SMP, the price of the touch-up is roughly 25% of the procedure price if we’re treating the same area.

You can get it lasered off. But if you have a botched SMP, a skilled SMP artist like Joey Dots can usually fix the botched procedure without getting laser removal.

You can go back to work the same day. You will not need any recovery time — just try to avoid any heavy sweating for 3-4 days.

We want the ink to settle, so try to avoid exercising and sweating for 3-4 days after your SMP session. However, after this period, you can shower and exercise as normal.

Density Fill makes the hair look a lot thicker and fuller (usually head is not shaved) and SMP Hairline Restoration recreates the persons hairline (head is usually shaved).
