A Complete Aftercare Guide Following Scalp Micropigmentation Treatment

Scalp Micropigmentation Treatment

If you’ve undergone scalp micropigmentation, congratulations! You’re on the right track to recover from your hair loss problem.

Although scalp micropigmentation treatment is reliable, long-lasting, and safe, you need to take care of yourself to maintain the new, groomed look. If you aren’t aware of the aftercare tips, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

In this blog, we’ll tell you about scalp micropigmentation treatment and its short-term and long-term care guidelines.

What’s Scalp Micropigmentation Treatment?

According to research, about 21 million women and 35 million men suffer from hair loss in the U.S. In the wake of this problem, many hair transplants and hair loss treatments came into the limelight. One such hair loss treatment is scalp micropigmentation.

Scalp Micropigmentation involves applying organic pigments to the scalp’s epidermal layer, which results in the replicated hair follicles. According to the person’s hair color, skin tone, and skin sensitivity, the practitioners choose the organic pigments.

Scalp micropigmentation differs from hair transplants as it doesn’t use anesthesia and doesn’t require a longer time to deliver results. Scalp micropigmentation shows realistic results just after 2-3 sessions. It’s suitable for distressed males and females suffering from hair loss, people who have mild to severe alopecia, people with uneven hairline or hairline recession, bald individuals, and cancer survivors.

How Does the Scalp Micropigmentation Process Go?

The scalp micropigmentation process takes approximately 4-5 sessions in total.

Preliminary Discussion

It starts with a consultation step discussing whether you’re a candidate for SMP. The client discusses their hair loss concerns and the goals to determine whether SMP can resolve them.

First Session (2-4 Hours)

The first session involves examining your scalp and natural hairline. The practitioners build the foundation to introduce the organic pigment to the scalp’s epidermal layer. The sensation that clients experience is more or less equal to cosmetic tattooing.

Second Session (1-4 Hours)

The practitioners then determine the scalp skin reaction to organic pigments. If they heal, they carry on to add more density to the hairline. If the scalp reacts adversely, they apply other natural compounds. Otherwise, they build texture on the scalp and make to give it the appearance of a fuller head of hair.

Third Session (1-2 Hours)

The third session is the final session of SMP application as the practitioners finalize the hairline and other detailing. They also address the patient’s other concerns.

Fourth and Fifth Session

These sessions are touch-up sessions and scheduled on the patient’s request after about a 6-8 months gap. Please let the ink settle on your scalp completely before going for touch-ups.

What are some After Care Guidelines for SMP Treatment?

For thorough understanding, let’s split the guidelines into two parts: short-term guidelines and long-term guidelines.

Short-term SMP After-Care Guidelines

These are the guidelines that clients need to follow in between their scalp micropigmentation sessions.

Days 1-3

You need to be extra-cautious within the first three days of your SMP treatment. Don’t expose your head to water or any moisture. Washing your head could fade the pigments, and the healing process will start all over again.

Also, try to avoid sweat promotional activities, such as going to the gym, exercising, or working strenuously. Sweat also prevents your scalp from healing properly.

Next, avoid going out in the sun because the sun emits harmful UV radiation that can adversely impact your hair proteins and scalp healing process. If it’s necessary to go out, wear a loose-fit hat to protect yourself from the sun rays.

Finally, after the first session, you shouldn’t plan any outings for swimming, beaching, or going to the seaside. The saline seawater and chloride pool water may impact your scalp’s healing process. It would be best if you don’t go swimming for at least 30 days.

Days 4-7

On the 4th day, you can wash your head but with warm water and sulfate-free shampoo. If you don’t have one, buy it or use only water for washing. It’s recommended to take a quick shower for a head rinse without any soaps and shampoos.

You may also want to shave your head, so go ahead but don’t use wet razor blades for shaving. Shave your head with an electric shaver. If you notice any scabs while shaving, don’t peel them and stop shaving immediately.

Finally, continue wearing a hat or a cloth to cover your head when you go out in the sun.

After One Week

After about one week to your SMP treatment’s final session, you can carry on with your routine. Don’t start all of sudden doing cardio exercises and taking long showers. Start slowly.

You may use shampoo and a razor blade for head shaving, but please be careful about the un-healed scabs on your head.

Long-Term SMP After-Care Guidelines

Two months have passed, and your friends and family have admired your new look. You’re enjoying and flaunting your hair with renewed self-confidence. But as nothing’s permanent, so is this SMP treatment.

You need to take care of your head for long term SMP results. Here are some long-term SMP care guidelines:

Moisturize and Exfoliate Your Scalp

Moisturize your scalp with a mild moisturizer at least once a day. Exfoliate it with a cleanser to remove all the dead scalp cells. You can use tanning and dyes, but don’t go for tanning beds as they’ll expose your scalp to UV radiations, accelerating the risk of fading.

Avoid Lengthy Sun Exposures

You can go out in the sun but avoid long sunlight exposure. If you plan to go to the beach, protect your scalp and apply sunscreen or wear a loose hat. Sunscreen with at least SPF50+ does an excellent job.

Non Alcoholic Products

Avoid using alcoholic creams or lotions on your head. Alcohol might affect your scalp sensitively. Creams and lotions with low alcohol content are fit for use.

Following these guidelines will keep your look fresh and maintained. For best results, you need to be extra careful. Don’t forget to consult with your dermatologist for aftercare sessions.
