Millennials and Hair Loss: What’s the Connection?

hair-loss-problem

It seems that millennials are losing more hair and more dramatically than their older counterparts. What’s more shocking is that it appears to be a worldwide predicament. Because while a New York hairstylist revealed that every day an increasing number of younger clients are complaining about experiencing hair fall and hair thinning, a study from China also showed that the Chinese youth is suffering from hair loss issues more than their predecessors.

So apparently there seems to be a connection between hair loss and millennials.

But what is it? Let’s find out!

We’re too Stressed!

Stressed Man

The sad reality is that stress has become a constant in millennial lifestyle. Be it student loans or just the cost of living in the 21st century; everything amounts to the increase in stress levels which in turn results in hair loss, as told by Dr. Doris Day of Day Dermatology & Aesthetics.

Dr. Day hypothesizes that stress disrupts the process of hair growth and production by removing the strands from the growth phase before they have matured.

While there’s less scientific evidence to prove that stress can induce hair loss, an experiment done on mice (where they were exposed to loud noises) determined that the stress induced due to the loud noises made the mice’s hairs to move to catagen before they were ready.

Nutritional Deficiency is also a Factor

The human body is an organism that functions at its best when its needs are fulfilled. The emergence of ‘woke culture’ and the increase of veganism are actually driving people into malnutrition.

Veganism prevents people from consuming vital nutrients like protein that are crucial for healthy hair growth. Other nutrients that are important for hair growth and are missing from the millennial diet are zinc and vitamin D, among others.

In fact, research from Texas also confirmed that the deficiency of certain nutrients in the body is the main cause of hair loss and thinning in millennials.

What’s the Good News?

While things may look shabby for millennials and their scalps, one silver lining is that their generation is more hair-aware than the previous generations, thanks to social media and the internet.
