Understanding Male Pattern Baldness

Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness is a condition that affects men during adulthood. It’s the main cause of hair lossfor over 95% cases and may require significant monitoring.

What Causes Male Pattern Baldness?

Hair loss is typically associated with three things: genetics, hormones, and age. As your hormone levels change over the course of your lifespan, it takes a toll on the hormones responsible for hair growth. This results in the loss of hair on your scalp.

Genetics also affect the growth of hair follicles. These can cause shrinkage of the follicles, resulting in the hair growing shorter and finer until ultimately it stops growing at all. Moreover, the older you get, the more likely you are to undergo these changes and lose hair.

Health Factors Associated With Hair Loss

In addition to your genetic makeup, patterned hair loss may also occur because of an existing or medical issue. The condition has been linked to prostate cancer, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. You may also experience hair loss after having undergone a major surgery or as a side effect of certain medications like blood thinners and anticoagulants.

Additionally, male pattern baldness may also indicate an unknown health condition. For instance, it may be a symptom of an iron deficiency, malnutrition, thyroid problem, or fungal infection.

How Can It Be Treated?

Male pattern baldness can be addressed in different ways:

Hair Transplant

Hair transplants are the most expensive method for treating hair loss. This invasive procedure involves removing hair from areas on the scalp where the hair growth is active, and having them transplanted to areas that are balding or thinning. The process may require multiple sessions, each carrying a risk of infection and scarring.

Medication

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), two types of drug treatment may be used for male pattern baldness. The first is the topical treatment Minoxidil, which may take 3–6 months to take effect. However, it has been linked with skin problems, blurred vision, and even irregular heartbeat.

The second is an oral treatment called Finasteride. This works even slower than Minoxidil, and has been associated with a number of adverse effects. These include breast tenderness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and skin rashes.

Scalp Pigmentation

The third way to go about treating male pattern baldness is by opting for a hair replication procedure. Scalp micropigmentation is one such method which makes use of customized ink to mimic the hair growth on the scalp. This is an immensely effective procedure performed over a course of 2–5 sessions, which gives one an appearance of having a head full of hair.
